The First World War Postcards
In 1914 Germany and Austro-Hungary went to war against Belgium, France and Russia. Others countries, including Great Britain, Italy and eventually the USA became involved. The war ended in November 1918 with the defeat of Germany and its allies. The postcards illustrate two key battles of the war – the Somme and Ypres; the Air War on the Western Front, and the major war poets.
The Second World War Postcard Collection
The war opened in 1939 with a resurgent Germany’s attack on Poland, bringing France and Great Britain into conflict. This spread and eventually Italy, Russia, Japan, the USA and others became involved. The war ended in 1945 after the dropping of the second atom bomb. The postcards explain two strategic operations of the war – the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944 and the Battle of Arnhem in the same year.
