Dickens, born in Portsmouth in 1812, has long been recognised as one of the most famous English writers. His fourteen completed novels, many reflecting his childhood experiences, were usually published in serial form, bringing him early fame, respectability, wealth – and on his death in 1870, burial in Westminster Abbey. This series of postcards illustrates Dickens' life in Kent and London and the four most popular books inhabited by his best known characters.
